The Israeli Defense Forces, which is the source of much local innovation, together with experts from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have created a robot snake that is capable
of recording video and sound in the field.
The tactical reconnaissance robot is two meters long and mimics the movements and appearance of real snakes, slithering around through caves, tunnels, cracks and buildings, while at the same time sending images and sound back wirelessly to a laptop computer, through which it is controlled.
As it is able to bend its joints sufficiently to squeeze through very tight spaces, the new device could be especially useful in finding people buried under collapsed buildings.
Though serpent-like robots have been under development since the 1970s, the robot snake created by the IDF is one of the most advanced of its kind and is the first one likely to be used in field applications.

Las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel, que son fuente de mucha innovación local, junto a expertos del Instituto de Tecnología de Israel – Technion han creado una serpiente robótica capaz de
grabar video y sonido en el terreno.
Este robot de reconocimiento táctico mide dos metros de largo e imita los movimientos y apariencia de serpientes verdaderas, deslizándose por cuevas, tuneles, grietas y edificios,mientras que envía al mismo tiempo imágenes y sonidos en forma inalámbrica (wireless) a un computador que lo controla.
Puesto que es capaz de doblar sus articulaciones lo suficiente para meterse en espacios muy reducidos, el nuevo aparato podría ser especialmente útil para encontrar personas enterradas bajo edificios derrumbados.
Aunque los robots similares a serpientes han estado en desarrollo desde los años 70, la serpiente robótica creada por las FDI es una de las más avanzadas en su clase y es la primera que probablemente será usada en aplicaciones sobre el terreno.
