Israeli chess grand master Boris Gelfand achieved one of the most highly regarded triumphs of Israeli chess on Monday, when he took home the grand prize in the Chess World Cup competition in the Russian city of Khanty Mansiysk.
Gelfand, 41, defeated former world champion Ruslan Pnomariov of Ukraine in the finals tie-breaker with a score of 7-5. This achievement gives Gelfand, who is ranked sixth in the world, a ticket to compete for the world champion title along with the eight best players in the world in 2010.
Some 128 top chess players competed for the title along with Gelfand in the Chess World Cup, most of the participants also carrying the title of 'grand master.'
Gelfand had twice participated in duels in 1993 and in 1996. He reached the semi-finals the second time, where he lost to former world champion and one of the world's best players, Anatoly Karpov.

El gran master de ajedrez israelí Boris Gelfand logró el lunes uno de los triunfos más altamente estimados del ajedrez israelí cuando regresó con el gran premio de la competencia por la copa mundial de ajedrez en la ciudad rusa de Khanty Mansiysk.
Gelfand, de 41 años, derrotó al anterior campeón mundial Ruslan Pnomariov en las finales de desempate con un score de 7-5. Este logro da a Gelfand, que ocupa el 6to. lugar mundial una posibilidad para competir en 2010 por el título de campeón mundial junto a los ocho mejores jugadores del mundo.
Cerca de 128 destacados jugadores compitieron por el título junto a Gelfand en el torneo por la copa de ajedrez mundial.
La mayoría de los participantes también tenía el título de gran master.
Gelfand había participado dos veces en duelos en 1993 y 1996. La segunda vez llegó a las semifinales, en donde fue derrotado por el anterior campeón mundial y uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo, Anatoly Karpov.
