The Union of Jewish Congregations of Latin America and the Caribbean is increasing interest among Latin American Jewry by engaging them in its activities electronically through social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
The UJCL recently broadcast its 12th biennial convention live online using twitter feeds, marking it the first Jewish event in Latin America to be broadcast on twitter, according to UJCL's director, Rabbi Joshua Kullock.
"It is a great leap in the challenge of reaching all those Jews who aren't able to participate in these kinds of events," said Kullock.

During the conference, UJCL, which brought together 180 Jewish leaders from 15 different countries, also held educational workshops focused on connecting Jewish communities through the web. Various workshops discussed how to build a blog for a congregation and the use of Facebook for congregations.
The UJCL works to build bridges between small progressive Jewish congregations in Latin America and the Caribbean and strives to strengthen Jewish life in the region.
Its conference in January focused on bringing those congregations together to discuss the challenges of building Jewish communities in the 21st century.
